Etching has been used by metal-workers in order to decorate guns, armor, cups, plates since the middle ages. In the fifteenth century, Daniel Hopfer invented printmaking using etched iron plates to print images onto paper. Rembrandt van Rijn, Fransisco Goya, and Pablo Picasso, among others have used etching techniques to create some of their most important works. Architectural Etching incorporates many traditional etching techniques used in printmaking.
